What Is Refractive Surgery?
Refractive surgery is the surgical correction of refractive errors of the eye, such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.
Introduction
Introduction
Surgery is one of the most rapidly evolving areas of ophthalmology. For example, the introduction of eximer lasers has replaced corneal incisions for ordinary cases in a short period of time. Furthermore, in the last decade the femtosecond laser for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) has improved the comfort, safety and effectiveness of refractive techniques. Currently, the femtosecond laser is also used for:
- Incisional Refractive surgery.
- Corneal tunnels or pockets to introduce annular segments or disc-shaped implants into the stroma.
- Penetrating or lamellar corneal transplant.
- Corneal Stromal lenticule extraction to change the refraction of the eye or small incision lenticular extraction (SMILE)
- (Refractive) lens exchange surgery.
About Refractive surgery
Many new approaches to correct presbyopia have been introduced in the last couple of years, including laser ablation profiles and intracorneal and intraocular implants.
The greatest paradigm shift may have been the Nobel prize–winning method for adjusting the refractive power of an intraocular lens (IOL) after implantation into the eye by targeted radiation with UV light.
Corneal cross-linking for the treatment of keratoconus is now a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)–approved treatment that also may have some potential as a refractive procedure.
Presion Intraocular
- Algunas personas sufrirán daño glaucomatoso inferior a 21 mmHg.
- EDAD: A mayor edad mayor riesgo.
